Note-taking Accommodation

Students request notes online

Volunteers register online

Students registered with Accessibility Services who have been approved for the accommodation of note-taking must sign-up online and submit a request for each course for which notes are required. If you wish to receive notes in more than one meeting section of a course (i.e. the lecture and tutorial), you must register for all of the sections. It is the student's responsibility to check on the status of his or her request, which includes the availability of the notes. Students with the note-taking accommodation are also expected to attend classes and participate as fully as possible.

As the service depends on the co-operation of both instructors and volunteers, students are advised that they allow approximately two weeks for requests to be processed fully. This includes the notification of the instructor to announce the need for volunteers, the registration of volunteers, and the submission of notes online.

As notes will be provided electronically, guidelines exist to maintain the academic integrity of the accommodation:
  • Notes acquired from the service are for the sole use of the student authorized for the note-taking accommodation, as approved by their Accessibility Services advisor
  • Notes may not be distributed or shared with any other students or individuals

Accessibility Services requires dependable volunteer note-takers in order to help students living with a disability achieve academic success.

You are not required to do any extra work in order to volunteer. The only requirements are that you attend your classes regularly and submit your notes consistently. Past volunteers report that their participation in this service has improved their own academic work, making their notes more comprehensive and detailed.

For your service, you will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Appreciation and verification of your participation as a volunteer. Many professors also recognize their student’s efforts to assist their fellow classmates.
